1. Check the source. Is it a primary source, like a company statement or on-chain data, or a screenshot of a screenshot?
2. Wait an hour. Early numbers in hacks and crashes are often wrong.
3. Ask what it changes for you. If your coins are in your own wallet, most exchange drama is just a story.
