Hold your own keys
If you do not control the private keys, you do not fully control the bitcoin. Self-custody puts you in charge, and also makes you responsible.
Types of wallet
- Hardware wallet: a small device that keeps keys offline. Best for savings.
- Mobile or desktop wallet: handy for small amounts you spend.
- Exchange account: not self-custody. The exchange holds the keys.
Hardware wallets overview
Well known makers include Trezor, Ledger, Coldcard, BitBox and Foundation (Passport). Each has trade-offs on price, open source code and ease of use. Links are on the resources page. This is not an endorsement.
Buy direct from the maker, never second hand, and check the packaging is sealed.
Seed phrase safety
Never share your seed phrase. Not with support, not with friends, not with any website. Anyone with those words can take your bitcoin.
- Write it on paper or stamp it in metal. No photos, no cloud notes, no email.
- Store it somewhere safe from fire, water and prying eyes.
- Only ever type it into the wallet device itself during recovery.
Setup checklist
- Buy a wallet from the official site.
- Set it up and write down the seed phrase.
- Send a small test amount.
- Practise a recovery before sending more.
- Move savings off exchanges.
