UK guide · Updated 1 November 2026The best Bitcoin wallet for you
The best Bitcoin wallet is the one where you, and only you, hold the keys, and that you will actually back up properly. This guide helps you choose. We do not take payment from any wallet maker and there are no affiliate links on this page.
First: what a wallet really does
A wallet does not store coins. Your bitcoin lives on the blockchain. The wallet stores the private keys that let you spend it, plus a backup called a seed phrase (usually 12 or 24 words). Whoever has those words has the bitcoin. New to this? Read What is a wallet? first.
Three types, and when each makes sense
| Type | Good for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | Buying, not keeping | The company holds your keys. Hacks, freezes, failure. |
| Phone app (hot wallet) | Small amounts, everyday use, Lightning | Malware, fake apps, a lost or stolen phone |
| Hardware wallet (cold) | Savings you plan to hold | Losing the seed phrase backup |
Many people use both: a phone wallet for spending money and a hardware wallet for savings. More in hot vs cold wallets.
What to look for
- Bitcoin-only firmware. Less code means fewer things to go wrong. Several makers offer a Bitcoin-only version.
- Open source. Anyone can check the code. Closed code means trusting the company.
- A screen on the device. Always check the address on the device itself before you send.
- Standard backups. A normal 12 or 24 word seed phrase lets you recover with other wallets if the maker disappears.
- Air-gap option. Some devices sign using QR codes or a memory card, so they never plug into a computer.
Bitcoin-focused hardware wallets people often choose
These are well known, long-running options. This is not a ranking and prices change, so check the maker's own site.
- Blockstream Jade: low cost, open source, can work air-gapped with QR codes.
- BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition: simple to use, Swiss made, Bitcoin-only firmware available.
- Coldcard: Bitcoin-only and built for security-minded users. More to learn.
- Foundation Passport: Bitcoin-only, air-gapped with a camera and QR codes.
- Trezor Safe range: open source with a Bitcoin-only firmware option.

For a phone wallet, look for an open source, self-custody app that shows you a standard seed phrase when you set it up.
Buy it safely
Buy only from the maker or an official reseller listed on the maker's website. Never buy second hand, and never use a device that arrives with a seed phrase already written down. A real wallet always creates new words for you during set up. Nobody genuine will ever ask for your seed phrase.
Set it up safely
- Create the wallet on the device and write the words on paper or metal. Never photograph them or type them into a phone or computer.
- Do a test restore before you add savings. It proves your backup works.
- Send a small amount first, then the rest.
- Store the backup somewhere safe from fire, flood and nosy visitors.
Want a quick check of your setup? Take our self-custody check. It never asks for keys.
