UK guide · Updated 2 November 2026Do I need to run a Bitcoin node?
No, you do not need a node to own Bitcoin safely. But running one lets you check the rules yourself instead of trusting someone else, and it is easier than it sounds.

What a node does
A node is a computer running Bitcoin software. It keeps a copy of every transaction and checks that each new block follows the rules, such as the 21 million limit. Thousands of nodes around the world do this, and nobody is in charge.
Do you need one?
- Just starting out: no. Get a good wallet and a solid backup first.
- Holding a meaningful amount: worth considering. Connecting your wallet to your own node means your balance and addresses are not shared with someone else's server.
- Curious and like tinkering: it is a great way to learn how Bitcoin works.
A node does not hold your Bitcoin and does not replace your recovery words.
Ways to run one

Worth knowing: setup is friendly, with a little more to learn than a plug and play box.
Bitcoin Core
Good for: anyone with a spare computer and some disk space.
Worth knowing: it is the original free software. It needs a few days to sync and a computer left on.
How to start

- Let it sync. The first sync can take a day or more.
- Point your wallet app at your node. Our Umbrel node guide shows the steps.
