The short version

Any of the three, set up properly and backed up well, is far safer than leaving Bitcoin on an exchange.

Side by side

Hardware wallet

Ledger

Good for: a well known device with a polished phone app, and Bluetooth on some models.

Worth knowing: it supports many coins, not only Bitcoin, and its firmware is closed source.

Hardware wallet

Trezor

Good for: open source firmware and a straightforward desktop and phone app.

Worth knowing: it supports many coins, and offers a Bitcoin-only firmware option.

Hardware wallet

Blockstream Jade

Good for: Bitcoin-only users who want a small device with a camera for QR code signing.

Worth knowing: it uses a virtual secure element, where part of the secret is released by a Blockstream server only with your PIN.

Questions to ask yourself

Other good options

Coldcard, BitBox and Foundation Passport are also respected. See every option on Choose a wallet and our hardware wallet reviews.
