Short verdict

The BitBox02 is one of the simplest hardware wallets to set up, with open source firmware, a secure element and a dedicated Bitcoin-only edition. Its main trade-offs are that it always needs a cable to a computer or phone and its small screen and touch sliders are not for everyone.

How it keeps keys safe

The BitBox02 uses two chips: a main chip that runs the open source firmware, and a secure element that protects the secret and limits PIN guesses. The design means you do not have to trust the secure element alone. You confirm every payment on the device. The firmware is open source and builds can be checked by outside experts. The Bitcoin-only edition removes all other coin code, which reduces what can go wrong.

Day to day use

You use it with the BitBoxApp on a computer or phone, or with Sparrow and other Bitcoin apps. Setup can create a backup on the microSD card that comes in the box, and you can also write down standard recovery words. Most people should do both, and keep the card and the words somewhere safe away from the device.

Good and weak points

Strengths

Good points

  • Open source firmware with a dual chip design.
  • Bitcoin-only edition with no other coin code.
  • Simple setup with microSD and recovery word backups.
  • Small and light, made in Switzerland.
  • Works with Sparrow and your own node.
Weak points

Worth knowing

  • No battery, so it always needs a USB-C cable.
  • No camera or QR air-gapped signing.
  • Small screen and touch sliders can feel fiddly at first.
  • The microSD backup is easy to forget about, and it is as sensitive as the recovery words.

Who it suits

Beginners who want an open source, Bitcoin-only device that is easy to set up, and who do not mind using a cable. If you want QR signing without cables, read the Jade review.

How we review

Every wallet review on SHATOSHI answers the same questions in the same order: who makes it, how it keeps your keys safe, what is open source, how backups work, how easy it is for a beginner and where it falls short. We do not score on price and we do not list prices. Some makers pay us a commission through affiliate links, and some do not. That makes no difference to the review, and the weak points stay in.

Buying one safely in the UK

Questions people ask

Is the BitBox02 good for beginners?
Yes. Setup is simple and guided by the BitBoxApp, and the Bitcoin-only edition keeps things focused.

What is the microSD card for?
It holds a backup of your wallet. Treat it like your recovery words: keep it private and away from the device.

Does BitBox02 work with a phone?
Yes, with the BitBoxApp and a cable. Android works over USB. iPhone support depends on your iPhone model and the device version, so check the BitBox site before you buy.
